At Family F.C., we believe every child should feel valued and empowered – no matter when they step onto the field.
That’s why we’re embracing the term “finishers” instead of “substitutes” for our young players. The phrase – recently popularised by Premier League club Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta and borrowed from rugby – sends a powerful message: every player matters. Starters may kick things off, but finishers come on to change the game, close it out, and bring fresh energy.
In youth football, the impact of language can’t be overstated. Calling a child a “sub” can unintentionally make them feel secondary – like they’re just waiting for a chance. But call them a finisher, and suddenly they’re part of the plan, with a clear and exciting role.
It’s also a great example of how we can learn from other sports to improve the youth football experience. Rugby has long embraced the idea that players coming off the bench have just as much tactical importance as those who start. Bringing that mindset into kids’ football helps build confidence, teamwork, and understanding of the game’s many layers.
At Family F.C., our mission is to help families bond through football, and that includes helping children feel like valued contributors – whether they start, finish, or cheer on their teammates.
Because at the end of the day, every player finishes stronger when they feel like they belong.
