Skill No 7: The Step-Over

Unlocking the Art of Football's Step-Over: Learn from Legends, Master the Skill! Explore its roots, when to use it, and a step-by-step guide to dazzle on the pitch.

ByCoach Jake

The step-over, also known as the "scissors" or "pedalada" in Portuguese, can trace its roots back to the streets of Brazil. It was perfected by Brazilian football legends like Pelé and Ronaldinho, who dazzled the world with their incredible ball-handling skills and creativity on the field.

When to Use the Step-Over on the Pitch

The timing of a step-over is crucial for its success. Here are some situations where you can effectively use this skill:

One-on-One Situations: When facing a single defender, especially near the touchline or in the attacking third, a step-over can be used to beat the defender and create a scoring opportunity.

Changing Direction: If you need to change direction quickly to evade an opponent, the step-over can help you pivot and accelerate in the opposite direction.

Creating Space for a Cross: Wingers often use step-overs to create space for a cross into the penalty area. By confusing the defender, they can gain a momentary advantage for delivering a precise cross.

Faking a Shot: Step-overs can also be used to fake a shot on goal. This can make the goalkeeper or defenders commit to a save, allowing you to exploit their position.

Breaking Down the Step-Over

Now that we understand the history, purpose, and when to use step-overs, let's break down the technique to master this skill:

Step One: Tell them to start with the ball at their feet, and approach it with controlled speed. Begin by taking a touch with your dominant foot, pushing the ball slightly to the side.

Step Two: Explain that with the ball now on one side of their body, they should quickly shift their weight to the opposite foot while keeping their body low and balanced.

Step Three: Ask them to use their non-dominant foot to make a semi-circle motion around the ball, without touching it. This is the "step-over" action.

Step Four: As they complete the step-over, tell them to try and immediately accelerate in the direction opposite to where they faked. This sudden change of direction can leave their defender behind.

The step-over is more than just a football move; it's an art form that combines deception, agility, and creativity. When executed correctly, it can be a game-changer on the pitch, allowing you to outfox opponents and create scoring opportunities. Remember that practice makes perfect, so head to the training ground, embrace the spirit of flair, and master the step-over. Whether you're an aspiring footballer or a fan of the beautiful game, you can appreciate the magic that this skill brings to the sport. So, lace up your boots, get out there, and let the step-over be your canvas to paint moments of brilliance on the football pitch.
