Skill No 11: The Bicycle Kick

ByCoach Jake

The bicycle kick, also known as the "scissor kick" or "overhead kick," has its origins shrouded in mystery. Some football historians trace its roots back to South America in the late 19th century. Others attribute its invention to European players in the early 20th century. Regardless of its precise origins, the bicycle kick has become a symbol of footballing finesse and daring creativity.

How to Execute a Bicycle Kick

Now, let's break down the steps to perform a bicycle kick. Remember that mastering this technique requires practice, balance, and timing.

Step 1: Tell your child to place themselves in a position where the ball is coming from above waist height and slightly behind them whilst keeping their eye on the ball's trajectory and judge the timing carefully.

Step 2: Explain the importance of maintaining good balance by planting one foot firmly on the ground. The other leg, the kicking leg, should be raised, ready to strike.

Step 3: As the ball approaches, tell them to decide the moment to strike. Remember that they'll be striking the ball with their non-dominant foot, the one planted on the ground.

Step 4: Show them how to lift their non-kicking leg high into the air, almost parallel to the ground. Extend their kicking leg fully and make contact with the ball at the peak of their jump. Lean backward slightly to generate power and lift the ball into the air.

Step 5: Tell them how to strike the ball, following through with their kicking leg. They should try to land on their non-kicking foot to maintain balance.

The bicycle kick is a timeless marvel of football, a testament to the beauty of the game and the boundless creativity of its players. While it may not be a move for every situation, understanding when and how to use it can make you a more versatile and exciting player on the pitch. So, the next time you find yourself in the right position, with the ball hanging invitingly in the air, don't hesitate to channel your inner acrobat and attempt the bicycle kick. Who knows, you might just create a moment of magic that will be remembered for years to come.
